I too continue to suffer from this problem since migrating to an quad
core opteron running rhel 4.2. To be more specific. The vmdconsole
window will begin to fill with this error as soon as I start typing
text for a new graphics rep.

I have spent hours searching the web for an answer to this annoyance
but have not found anything substantial.
