windows falls into the category that may mess
with your installation without asking, so i'd
suggest to try re-installing the (latest?) ATI
drivers to see whether that will resolve your
problems. also, if you installed any other OpenGL
based program or game, that may affect your installation.

check out the startup message in the VMD console window.
