this code is scary and does some pretty unusual tricks
to do what it does and access to stdio is not like
on a regular console. for puts/gets i would recommend
to run from the regular terminal window.
otherwise, you can write your own tk based dialogs.
checkout tk_popup or some of the custom generic
popups shipped with the distribution.
