Hi Markus,
  Yes, the latest versions of the pre-release VMD 1.8 test versions
have new VRML 2.0 file export code. Its not quite finished to my
satisfaction yet, but it does basically work. If you or others would
like to test this new VRML 2.0 code, I've just placed a LINUX tar
file on FTP for you:
 ftp://ftp.ks.uiuc.edu/pub/mdscope/vmd/alpha/vmd-1.8a28.bin.LINUX.opengl.tar.gz
