Hi Christian,
Yes, the pre-release version for MacOS X was broken, the plugins didn't
work correctly, so nothing could be loaded. This and many other problems
have recently been fixed, so I expect to release a new pre-release version
shortly. I'll be announcing it on VMD-L as soon as it is ready, hopefully
in the next day or two.

FYI for all Mac people:
We have the first native version of VMD for MacOS X running now!
It lacks Tk, and still has some performance issues, but
it runs, and no longer requires XFree!!! We will begin providing two
MacOS X versions, a "Mesa" version which requires XFree, and a native
version which is based on the native OpenGL and a native build of FLTK.
Another factor with the native version is that the distribution mechanism
is now more complicated, since the native version has to package up
resources, which don't behave well with the standard tar file and make-based
installation mechanism. We are working on a Mac-specific installation
and distribution mechanism, but I don't think we'll have it quite ready
for the next pre-release, so for now the only people that'll probably be
able to use the native version will be people that have the MacOS X
developer tools installed, and can run the "Rez" program to fix the
installed VMD binary. I'll write more about this when we release the
  next alpha version.

Thanks,
  John Stone
