Dear Dmitry,
I have a few questions and suggestions to help narrow down the source
of your problem. Are you running the "mesa" or "opengl" version of VMD?
I also assume you are trying to run VMD 1.7.1, right? In order to see if
this is a graphics problem or a dynamic link library problem, try running
VMD using this command:
  vmd -dispdev text

If you are able to start VMD in the text-only mode (which people often
use for running analysis scripts overnight etc..), then that would indicate
that your problem is graphics related. If not, then its probably a shared
library or runtime system problem.

Try that out and let us know what happens, and we'll proceed from there.

Thanks,
  John Stone
