Abstract

Abundant protein sequence data arising from genome sequencing projects permits the reconstruction of the evolutionary histories of protein families in considerable detail. This, in turn, has provided a broad, empirical understanding of how proteins suffer mutation, insertion, and deletion during divergen evolution under functional constraints. From this understanding has come new approaches to predict the conformation of proteins, new tools for deducing biological function, and a deeper understanding of structure, conformation, and reactivity in proteins.

Tea and coffee will be served in R3151 Beckman Institute at 2:15pm.
