    Three of our beginners participated in the competition on
    Saturday: Jeff, Lynn, and Audrey. Audrey was only there in the
    morning, and Lynn could only make it for the afternoon and
    evening.

    Congradulations to all three of them on their results:
    * In beginner waltz, Jeff and Audrey were called back into the
      "A" group.
    * In beginner foxtrot, Jeff and Jeanine (a beginner from Iowa)
      made it to the "A" group finals, placing 6th.
    * There were two "Jack and Jill" waltz events where dancers
      were matched up with random partners. One of the events
      paired up beginning leaders with advanced followers; Jeff
      and Amy (a woman he had never met before) made it to the
      finals, placing 6th. In the other event, advanced leaders
      were paired up with beginning followers. This event was short
      on leaders, so Jeff and a few other beginning men competed as
      well. Jeff and another partner he had never met
      were called back -- that is to say that Jeff and his partner
      did better than half of the advanced men and their partners!
    * In beginner cha cha, Jeff and Lynn made it to the finals in
      the "B" group, placing 5th.
    * In beginner jive/swing, Jeff and Lynn made it to the finals
      in the "B" group, placing 3rd.
    * In open rumba, Jeff and his partner made it to the finals in
      the "B" group, placing 4th. Lynn and her partner also made
      it to the "B" group finals, placing 2nd.
      ("Open" in this case means that beginning and advanced dancers
       compete in the same event.)
    * In open hustle, Lynn and her partner were called back into the
      "B" group semi-finals. Jeff -- with another partner he had
      never met before -- placed 6th in the "B" group finals.
    * In open salsa/mambo, Lynn and her partner made it to the "A"
      group finals, placing 6th.
    * In open nightclub two-step, Jeff and his partner placed 3rd
      in the "B" group finals. Lynn and her partner finished 3rd
      in the "A" group finals.
    * In open Lindy hop, Lynn and her partner placed 7th.

    Our club will probably be travelling to some competitions in
    the spring; I hope more people from our beginner classes
    decide to compete. I suspect if you asked them, Jeff, Lynn,
    and Audrey would all tell you they had fun and plan to compete
    again.
