The NAMD User's Guide explains how SMD moves an imaginary bead along
at a constant velocity; that bead is connected by a spring to your
atoms' center of mass. So, on average, you atoms will move along at a
constant velocity, but they are also free to move while attached to
the spring and imaginary bead.
