Next weekend (Sat Apr 13) Fred and Yermen Romero, are returning to
Champaign-Urbana to give Argentine tango workshops. (They will also be
returning on Sat Apr 27.) They are renowned tango instructors in Chicago,
where their impact is recognized in the dancing of many of Chicago's best
tango dancers. Several of their students have gone on to become tango
instructors themselves. Those who have taken Fred & Yermen's workshops here
in Champaign-Urbana have recognized the high quality and impact of their
teaching. Therefore, don't miss the opportunity to partake in the following
workshops (at the Phillips Recreation Center):
(1) Salon style tango 3:30 - 5 PM
This is the popular elegant style of tango that arose in Buenos Aires during
the 1940s, the Golden Age of Tango, and is the foundation from which stage
tango evolved. This series of workshops will concentrate on: technique for
effective leading and following within the standard repertoire of tango
patterns, the use of adornments within the context of pattern building, and
musicality (the matching of tango patterns to musical phrasing).
(2) Vals 5:15 - 6:45 PM
Immigrants to Argentina from Europe brought the waltz with them. At first,
waltz was danced in the European style, but soon tango steps were adapted to
the waltz rhythm to create the third major rhythmic variant (along with tango
and milonga) within the repertoire of tango music. However, vals cruzado is
not just tango steps danced to vals rhythm. Vals has a character and style of
its own, with rhythmic variations (syncopations) centered around its 1-2-3
rhythm. This workshop series will explore the unique characteristics of the
vals, its style, and its musicality.
The same schedule will be followed on Apr 13 and Apr 27. Each workshop is
independent, so it is not necessary to have taken Fred & Yermen's workshops
during previous visits to attend. The pre-requisite (level of dancing) is
successful completion of a beginner level Argentine tango class.
Cost (each visit): $20 ($15 for students) for 1 workshop, $35 ($25 for
students) for 2.
Location: Phillips Recreation Center, Springfield & McCullough, Urbana.
