load balance strategy query

Hi all,
      Can someone tell me : What kind of load balancing strategies NAMD implements and where they have been documented and why one should be preferred over others including what situations?
  I have my run stuck for over a day after a load balance command in log file. I did search some previous posts and found 'load balancing' might be one issue. ANy information on load balance strategies will do great.
