NAMD interaction with VMD

I am trying to better understand how NAMD works with VMD. Is the
following correct?

1. NAMD receives any external force data from VMD (i.e. force from a
Phantom)
2. The total energy is calculated without considering any external
forces that VMD has sent to NAMD.
3. However, external forces from VMD are considered when new locations
of the atoms are calculated.
4. New locations and energy information is sent to VMD.
5. Process repeats
