NAMD binaries are currently built on Solaris 8 (SunOS 5.8), so I wouldn't
expect them to run on earlier versions of the OS.

You might want to consider upgrading Solaris on your machine. Solaris 2.6
(SunOS 5.6) last shipped in July 2001 and new patches are not available.

We try to have old enough versions of the various operating systems on our
compile boxes that the binaries will run on most people's machines, but
never more than one major version behind the current release. For some
platforms we are dependent on machines we don't own, so we're at the mercy
of the machine owner. Older stable versions of NAMD and VMD remain
available for download, so people with older operating systems can at
least run those easily.
