Dear Swing Society,
I would like to cordially invite you to the All-Out
Swing & Salsa Bash: Valentin's Graduation Party!
(and DANCE CONTEST). It's next Friday, the first day
of finals. A great stress reliever :) Here are the specifics:
Friday Evening, May 7, 1999
All-Out Swing & Salsa Bash: Valentin's Graduation Party!
featuring Dr. Bob's Swingin' Big Band...
a 12-piece 30's Big Band, featuring former members
of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra,
the Benny Goodman Orchestra, etc. Half of the band
members are band directors/leaders of other Big Bands
themselves. Besides Swing, they will also play some Salsa
and other Latin music: Salsaneros please come!
Lessons at 7pm, Band plays from 8 to 11:30pm
Beginner Swing: 7 to 7:30 by Valentin and LindyGirl Laura
(Laura's dad is "Dr. Bob", the drummer and band leader)
Beginner Salsa: 7:30 to 8 by (TBA)
DANCE CONTEST: 9pm
The 6 heats are:
1. Amateur Swing (medium tempo) (3 months or less of swing)
2. Open Swing (fast tempo)
3. Open Lindy/Swing (medium tempo)
4. Open Salsa
5. Jack and Jill (partners randomly matched by ballot)
6. Mystery song * (must try to swing to a non-swing song!)
Admission: $5/person. Additional $5/couple for contest,
Add'l $10/couple for 2 or more heats of contest. Couples
may participate in up to 5 heats, and may switch partners for
different heats.
Prizes: 1st Place: $$$, or gift certificate to local sponsor (TBA)
2nd Place: CD's (TBA)
Judging: Will probably be members of the Swing Society
and the Dancing Illini.
