Re: The practice tonight was NOT for beginners

I'm extremely pleased to see so many beginners coming out to practice.
Because we do have so many beginners there, I noticed that we don't quite
have a beginner's mix of music for practice last week. We've been working
on a different tape (or minidisc) that will be strictly beginner music.
Due to time constraints, it wasn't ready for this practice, but hopefully
it will be ready soon.

generate some dance cards so you can reference it.

In the past, we only had a single practice for the Dancing Illini, so we
had to mix in beginner and intermediate type music on a single tape. Now
that we also have a Monday night practice at the Regent (9:30-11:00pm)
geared toward Intermediate/Advanced dancers (though beginners are welcome
there), it is time we think about tailoring our practice music to the
people who show up to each.

For those of you who don't know, we do have a Monday night practice at the
Regent from 9:30-11:00pm that is geared toward Intermediate/Advanced level
dancers. We split the ballroom in half and play Standard dances in one
and Latin in the other. This is a good time to practice for our (and
other) competitions since it is a solid 1.5 hours of practice (no
quickies) and no one is expected to help others (show up with a partner or
hope you can find someone there) though if you want to help others, no
one will stop you.

Wednesday night is geared more toward the Beginner (as soon as we get a
new tape ready) and there are intermediate and advanced level dancers
there who can be asked for help.

As for numbers, we have approximately 10-20 people showing up on Mondays,
most with partners, others just dancing or working on their own. We have
had 35-50 people showing up to our Wednesday night practices lately (at
least the last 2-3 weeks). I usually don't bother practicing, making
myself available to help beginners. You will occasionally find our
instructors there and other advanced dancers who are willing to help. We
have our quickies at 9:30 and then we play the practice tape. This is an
excellent time to catch up when you miss a class or to polish up some
figure you might be having trouble with.

Like all volunteer things, if someone isn't willing to help, don't feel
scorned or hurt nor hold it against them. Not everyone's day goes well
nor is everyone always there to help. But feel free to ask for help.
