Quantum Control and Detection

Quantum control and detection theory will be presented. In the weak response regime, we study one-photon optimal pump and two photon optimal pump-dump control. In both cases, the optimal control can be recast as an eigenvalue problem. Since most of chemistry occurs in condensed phases, we also explore the controllability for these larger systems. We employ nearly classical and semiclassical Gaussian Wavepacket dynamics for condensed phase systems. Finally, our numerical simulations have shown good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental results. Data for Rps. acidophila, Rb. sphaeroides and Rs. molischianum will be discussed. The data lead determination of the level structure of the B850 absorption band, including the location of the lowest energy and weakly absorbing exciton level of A symmetry (B870). the importance of energy disorder is emphasized. Finally, the mechanism for ~ 100 fs inter-exciton level relaxations of the B850 moleculares is discussed.
