have you tried following the suggestion that mpiexec gives you
on the screen? i.e. redirect input from stdin? i.e. add < /dev/null
befor the '&'???

please note, that this is the behavior of your MPI installation
and has nothing to do with NAMD. so if you need any clarifications
i suggest reading the mpiexec documentation.
