MEETING MINUTES

General Meeting, August 4, 1997, 10pm, Illini Union

1. The Co-Education Chairs, Anne Liwigs and Scott Weitzenhoffer, as well
as the club's Vice President, Bruce Powers, have resigned. Nominations
were opened for the position of Vice President. If you are interested
in filling this position, email the club officers at
dancing-officers@uiuc.edu.

2. The cabinet needs to be moved back to Freer Gym in the next few weeks.
Volunteers are needed to help with the move. If you are interested in
helping out, contact Cory (ch-tsang@uiuc.edu).

3. Quad Day is August 29. The club needs volunteers to hand out flyers and
participate in demonstrations. Those interested in volunteering should
contact Cory.

4. The following curriculum changes were proposed by Cory and Tanja.

Change 1: Cancel the seconds level of intermediate class and replace it
with a third beginner level class.

The new beginner class would offer Swing, Waltz, and Rumba
and be taught be the competition wing with a focus intended
for the more competitive dancers.

Rational: Second level of intermediate class has a consistently poor
enrollment, and of those who do enroll, generally half of
these students actually possess the prerequisites to take the
class so it is virtually impossible for it to be taught at a
truly Intermediate 2 level.

Mark Balzer also proposed that the club offer two Intermediate 1
level classes rather than a third beginner. This option would better
fit the skill level of current members.

A vote was taken on the following options

A. Make no changes.

B. Offer 3 beginner classes

C Offer 2 Intermediate 1 level classes

Those present approved Option B. There were 0 votes for A, 18 for B,
and 3 for C.

Change 2: Replace Salsa in beginner class 1a with NC 2-step

Rational: NC 2-step is easier for beginners to grasp and therefore they
have a better chance at being successful at it. In addition,
the current teaching "staff" prefers teaching NC 2-step to
salsa.

Several members pointed out that salsa is very popular. If the club
stops offering salsa, the attendance in the beginner classes could
suffer.

A vote was taken on the above change. Those present voted to keep salsa
in the beginner 1a curriculum. There were 10 votes to continue teaching
salsa, 5 to teach NC 2-Step, and 4 abstentions.
