Dancing Illini Salsa Formation Team!

The Dancing Illini is proud to offer yet another incredible opportunity
to improve your dancing and showcase it to the University community. Team
captain Yahna Awazu and coach David Lin (professional dance instructor and
owner of the Regent Ballroom) will once again combine their talents in this
effort.

We are looking for dedicated people who can commit to Thursday night weekly
classes at the Regent Ballroom in Savoy from 9:00 - 11:00pm, and to
frequent practices before performances. Our goal is to perform in a
minimum of 3-4 shows throughout the year.

Since the team can only perform as well as the members who make it up, a
major focus in our coaching sessions will be on turning each and every
member into an excellent Salsa dancer. There will be a participation fee
to cover the costs of the professional instruction, coaching and
choreography.

Being a member of a formation team is a lot of fun and you're guaranteed
to make a bunch of close friends. If you would like to be a part of this
exciting group, please write Yahna Awazu at y-awazu@students.uiuc.edu
We hope to hear from you soon!!!!!

Dancing Illini Swing Formation Team!

With the interest generated from the Salsa formation team in full Swing
(ha ha; little joke there :-) and with so many new club members who can't
wait to dance, we have a second formation team; a Swing formation team.

A formation team is a group of dancers who learn a choreographed dance
routine and give performances. You typically spend a few weeks learning
the routine, and then a few weeks honing your dancing skills. There is
something in it for everyone. The team can even get costumes from
Krannert.

Allison Cobb is the leader of the Swing formation team effort.
Amy Berger is coach and choreographer.
Practices will be held on Wednesday evenings at 8pm, tentatively in the
first floor lounge of the Lincoln Ave. Residence Halls (LAR)

Being a member of a formation team is a lot of fun and you're guaranteed
to make a bunch of close friends.
Contact Allison at ar-cobb@students.uiuc.edu to become a part of it!

Dancing Illini "Team Match" Team!

Preparing for and participating in competitions is one of the best ways to
become a better dancer. There are several intercollegiate dance
competitions coming up in the spring. Each of these competitions features
a "team match" segment that we'd like to participate in.

If you've never seen a team match, it's a dance contest between college
teams of 8 dancers. Each person dances one dance with his or her partner
and is given a score by the judges. The scores are totaled, and the team
with the highest score wins.

(Don't worry - couples are not out on the floor alone; if 10 colleges
attend the comp, there will be 10 couples out on the floor together.... In
fact, it can be hard to hear the music with everyone on the sidelines
screaming for their team at the top of their lungs!)

To prepare teams of dancers for this exciting experience. The DI is
offering a course which will emphasize technique and competitive styling
for the competitive dancer.

Course: Team Match Preparation Course
Date: TBA
Time: TBA
Cost: TBA
Location: TBA
Instructors: Andrew Tate and Lara Yates
Prerequisites: Some ballroom dance experience and a commitment to
represent the Dancing Illini at one or more
intercollegiate dance competitions:

Case Western: Feb 16-17, 1997
Ohio State U: March 15, 1997
Notre Dame U: March 22, 1997
Heartland (Indy): April 12-13 1997

Curriculum: Fundamentals of Quickstep & Jive (Swing).
There are two objectives for this course:
1. to learn the technique necessary for dancing
competitive figures in the above dances.
2. form competitive teams for the following dances;

Waltz
Cha-cha
Quickstep
Jive (Swing)

Try it out! Just show up - no need to pre-register!
We have a big gym with a wood floor, and we have wireless
microphones and a speaker system so everyone will be able
to clearly hear the instructors.
We look forward to dancing with you!
