Dancing Illini Salsa Performance Group!

The Dancing Illini is proud to offer yet another incredible opportunity to
improve your dancing and showcase it to the University community! Starting
this fall, the Dancing Illini will organize a Salsa Formation Team!

The Salsa Formation Team will be led by Yahna Awazu and Jennifer Jones, who
will ensure that this will be a first class effort all the way. The
choreographer will be announced once the final selection is made, but we
are currently interviewing 3 very talented, highly recommended professional
choreographers from Chicago. The team will be coached by David Lin,
professional dance instructor and owner of the Regent Ballroom.

We are looking for dedicated people who can commit to weekly practices, and
more frequent practices before performances. Our goal is to perform in a
minimum of 3-4 shows throughout the year: Fiesta del Sol, the Dancing
Illini Invitational dance competition on October 26, The Ohio State and
Notre Dame dance competitions in the Spring (transportation will be
provided), Quad day 97, etc.

Since the team can only perform as well as the members who make it up, a
major focus in our coaching sessions will be on turning each and every
member into an excellent Salsa dancer. In this regard, the Salsa Formation
Team will be run like a sports team, with a coach and tryouts. There will
be a participation fee to cover the costs of the professional instruction,
coaching and choreography.

Being a member of a formation team is a lot of fun and you're guaranteed to
make a bunch of close friends. If you would like to be a part of this
exciting new group, please write Yahna Awazu at:

y-awazu@students.uiuc.edu

with your name, phone number and email address. We will hold the first
get-acquainted meeting on Tuesday September 10 at 8pm in the first floor
lounge of the Speech and Hearing Science Building. We hope to hear from
you soon!!!!!

Dancing Illini Swing Performance Group!

With the Salsa formation team in full Swing (ha ha; little joke there :-)
and with so many new club members from our successful summer classes, there
has been tremendous interest in starting a second formation team; a Swing
formation team.

A formation team is a group of dancers who learn a choreographed dance
routine and give performances. You typically spend a few weeks learning
the routine, and then a few weeks honing your dancing skills. There is
something in it for everyone. The team can even get costumes from
Krannert.

To bring the idea to life, we need someone (or a group of someones) to lead
the Swing formation team effort. The team leader's job involves collecting
names, finding a choreographer, working with the choreographer to pick
music/dances, finding a coach, and scheduling coaching sessions and
practices.

I'll pass along these options that the team leaders/members can discuss:
We have a video of a national swing competition that features several Swing
formation teams, to give you an idea of what can be done.
Amy Berger has a Swing routine that she choreographed 2 years ago when
she organized a previous DI formation team. It's ready to go and do-able.
Amy would be happy to teach the routine.
I can provide a long list of excellent Swing dance coaches in
Indianapolis and St. Louis that we can work with.

Being a member of a formation team is a lot of fun and you're guaranteed to
make a bunch of close friends. Let Mark (m-balzer@uiuc.edu) know if you
can take the reins, or just be a part of it!
