(*) Benny Goodman in Chicago's Bismarck Hotel's Palace Theater, 6/16

BENNY GOODMAN RETURNS TO CHICAGO FOR FATHER'S DAY!

The Jazz Institute of Chicago presents the Fletcher Basington Orchestra with
special guest Louie Bellson performing the music of Fletcher Henderson and
Benny Goodman at the beautifully restored Palace Theater, 171 W. Randolph on
Father's Day, 3pm, June 16, 1996!

The Bismarck Hotel's Palace Theater, one of Chicago's beautiful, historic
sites, is the setting for this very special concert and the dance floor will
be open! It is the perfect opportunity to allow dad to reminisce about the
olden days when big bands reigned supreme in theaters and dance halls around
the country. The Jazz Institute of Chicago, in conjunction with the
Bismarck Hotel and 90.9FM WDCB, is proud to present this performance which
will focus on the music of Benny Goodman and one of his most important
influences, composer/arranger/bandleader Fletcher Henderson.

The concert will take place at 3pm in the Palace Theater, which is located
at 171 W. Randolph. Tickets for the concert are $15 general admission, $13
for Jazz Institute of Chicago and WDCB members, seniors and students. Prior
to the concert, the Bismarck Hotel, which is located next door, will provide
a special father's day brunch in the Crown Room Restaurant for an
additional fee. Tickets for the concert can be purchased through the Jazz
Institute of Chicago at (312) 427-1676.

"The elegant Palace Theater with its full stage, dance floor and cabaret
seating is the ideal space in which to restore the music of the swing era to
a proper setting," said Richard Wang, co-leader of the Fletcher Basington
Orchestra and Professor of Music at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

When Benny Goodman formed his first big band in 1934 to broadcast
coast-to-coast on the NBC "Let's Dance" program, his biggest problem was
finding the right kind of "hot" arrangements to showcase his band. The
answer was found right there in New York in the music of Fletcher Henderson.
By the time the "Let's Dance" series ended in 1935, Goodman was crowned the
"King of Swing", and he attributed his success to the 31 arrangements he had
received from Fletcher Henderson and his brother Horace. The Swing Era was
born that year.

Referred to by Duke Ellington as "not only.. the world's greatest
drummer..[but also] the world's greatest musician", Louie Bellson has
expressed himself on the drums since he was three years old. At 17, he
triumphed over 40,000 drummers to win the Gene Krupa contest. He has
performed and/or recorded scores of albums (approximately 200) as a leader,
co-leader, or sideman with such greats as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny
Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Woody Herman. Composer and author, he has written
more than 300 compositions and has published more than a dozen books on
drums and percussion. He received the prestigious American Jazz Masters
Award from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1994. In addition, Louie
Bellson is a six-time Grammy Award nominee.

This program was made possible by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency;
the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest National Jazz Network, a program of the New
England Foundation for the Arts; the Benjamin J. Rosenthal Foundation;
American Airlines; and 90.9FM WDCB, Public Radio From College of DuPage.
