Course Requirements: There are no formal prerequisites for this graduate level course. However, some basic knowledge of Mathematical Methods (e.g., Physics 411, 412), of Statistical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics, (e.g., Physics 462, 480), and some basic computer skills (e.g., knowledge of a programming language, or how to use Mathematica) will be very useful.
Homework: There will be six homework sets and a project, which can be chosen from suggestions by the instructor or suggested by students.
Recommended texts:
  1. C.W. Gardiner ``Handbook of Stochastic Methods'' (Springer, 1983)
  2. H. Risken ``The Fokker-Planck Equation'' (Springer, 1984)
  3. C.W. Gardiner ``Quantum Noise'' (Springer, 1991)
  4. N.G. van Kampen ``Stochastic Processes in Physics and Chemistry'' (North-Holland, 1992)
