Establishing a Connection

The first step in starting a new simulation, or in attaching to a running simulation, is to establish a connection with the MDComm control daemon (called rappd) on the remote computer. Enter the machine name and username in the given text areas, and press the Connect button. This then directs VMD to connect to the remote MDComm daemon, which will return information about available applications, and running jobs, on that computer.

After the connection is established, two browsers will be shown:

  1. A browser listing the available applications. These are the names of programs which can connect to VMD through this mechanism. If you are starting a new simulation, select the name of the program you wish to start, and press the Get Parameters button.
  2. A browser listing the running jobs. These are jobs which were previously started by VMD, and left running (by using the detach ability in VMD). To reconnect to these jobs, select the appropriate job and press the large button at the bottom of the form.
