Compiling charm++-5.9: Problems with g++

We are trying to compile charm++-5.9 libraries on a opteron cluster
running SuSE 9.2 with myrinet. Configuration fails with the error:

g++: cannot specify -o with -c or -S and multiple compilations

The version of gcc is 3.3.4. Do we maybe need a newer version of gcc?
