Skagway - 31 May 2007

Skagway was the furthest-north stop on our tour, and certainly the most rustic. In our never-ending quest to see wild animals, Beth and I chose to go on the Eagle Preserve Wildlife River Adventure tour, which was certainly the best tour that we went on during our trip. It was long, and cold, and the hot dogs were kindof cheesy, but we saw moose! And eagles! And swans! And... no bears or wolves, sadly, but we tried.

I should also note that picture-taking was not ideally suited for being on the ship we were on. We loved what we saw, but that doesn't mean I was able to photograph it as well as I could see it.

Images
Eagle Preserve Wildl..River Adventure tour
This time, we went out of our way to find our tour leader immediately.
Beth
My smiling wife. Yay!
Mountain and Ships
The ships actually seem impressively large from this angle, which of course they are.
Helicopter
Flying above us, it was a good indication that we were near civilization.
Trees and Mountains
Playing with the lens, it was actually interesting to look at.
Free-Standing Ships
Awaiting a new Great Flood?
Skagway Harbor Map
We were there. You can tell, because of the red dot.
Odd Graffiti
Apparently, it's put there by the cruise ships. Odd.
Norwegian Sun
It's back! Grr!
Waterfall
The waterfalls were gorgeous no matter where we went.
Waterfall, II
I just couldn't stop taking pictures of them. Grr!
Eagle in a Tree
Just a white dot in a forest, but it was obviously an eagle.
Seal Point
There was a small rocky crag where a bunch of seals were hanging out.
Seals
Seals are so cute!
Seals, II
And they seemed at least vaguely interested in this ship full of people that was hanging out near them.
Seals, III
Yes, as usual, their eyes were a bit soulless...
Seals, IV
...but that doesn't make them not cute.
Seals, V
I was happy to have the proper lens out to take pictures of them, too.
Landscape
I like the depth of the multiple mountains.
Seward
This is where our trip to the actual river would begin.
Weenie Roast
They fed us hot dogs, because it was a change from the standard cruise food.
Glaciers
Two small glaciers went down the nearby mountains.
Patient Beth
I need more in-focus shots of her.
Animals Counts
This is how many of each type of animal they'd seen in the last couple of years. A wolf? Really?
Our Bus
It's the Blue Bird, but it's kind of muddy green.
Mountain Goat
Over on the left, there's a white dot. I have been assured that it's actually a mountain goat.
Flying Swan
Finally on the water, I now had a whole bunch of additional challenges to taking pictures.
Flying Swans
Focus is hard enough when you're not rocking back and forth every couple of seconds.
Flying Swans, II
But I didn't do *too* badly at the whole thing anyway.
Swimming Swans
These guys were happier to see people, apparently, or at least more used to the boats.
Swimming Swans, II
I was at least able to get an adequate picture of them as we went by.
Riverland
I don't think this was anything in particular, but it shows off what most of the river looked like.
Distant Mountains
You know, I don't think we actually saw any snow close-up during the trip!
Cloudy Mountains
Were they Misty, perhaps?
The River
It was apparently very shallow, but enough for the boats to go along.
Eagle in a Tree Again
The whole point of this preserve was to leave the land as natural as possible, for the eagles and other animals.
More Mountains
They weren't trying to chase off tourism, just to make sure that it had very limited impact.
Moose Spotting
Behold, the frigging huge creature!
Moose with Calves
These guys were hanging out in the swamp-like area
Moose with Calves, II
But man, they were hard to take good pictures of!
Moose with Calves, III
Getting it to focus through the trees was a challenge, but hey, those things were cool to look at!
Fleeing Moose
They weren't leaving very fast, but they were leaving. This was the best shot I ever got of 'em.
Fleeting Moose, II
We saw a total of 8 moose over the tour.
Fleeing Moose, III
Apparently, we managed to chase away all of the moose before the other boat, behind us, could see them.
Fleeing Moose, IV
I think that engendered some kind of righteous bitterness.
Closer Eagle
This one was at least a lot closer, so I could get something resembling a good shot.
Yearling Moose
This was Moose #7, a yearling that was actually kind of curious as to our disposition.
Yearling Moose, II
This was my best chance at a spectacular shot, and I tried, but it didn't quite work out.
Yearling Moose, III
But I'm still going to play with this shot and see what I can get...
Fleeing Moose
This was the eighth, and last, Moose, that was definitely afraid of us and getting the heck out of there.
Fleeing Moose, II
Yep, we're still here.
Beaver Tree
I think they killed it.
Eagle Nest
I liked the eagle in the nest. Its mate was apparently nearby, but we didn't see it.
More Swans
Watching us go by, rather bored.
Flying Eagle, I
The white dot there is the eagle's tail feathers.
Flying Eagle, II
Over time, I got some better shots of it.
Flying Eagle, III
And here it actually looks like an eagle.
Landing Eagle
Coming in for a landing.
Resting Eagle
Again, a pretty good shot, but not as good as I got in Ketchikan.
Resting Eagle, II
I can hardly feel like I was wasting film, though. Most people would kill for a shot this good.
More Mountains
Landscapes are difficult to describe, but still pretty to look at.
Eagle in the Sky
Did I mention that there were a lot of eagles?
Wind Boat
I kindof wish we could have gone on one of these instead, but only because I've never been on.
Wind Boat, II
The lower capacity would have been sad.
Fort Seward Totem Pole
Fort Seward had been set up to help defend the border against Canadian incursions after a gold rush. The town of Haines was built around it, and I got at least this picture of the old commons area.
Isolated Houses
That's definitely isolated. And kindof cool.
Beth and Scenery
*smile* There. A good shot of my love and life, finally.
Kayaking Tour
That just isn't our thing, but they looked happy enough. If cold.
More Foggy Mountains
The photos will never do them justice, sadly.
Tour Wharf
All of the tours began from here, apparently. It was restricted, after all..
Haines, Again
Another shot of the small city.
Fort Seward
This is most of the fort, around the central grassy area. It's mostly tourists and homes now.
Back on the Ship
It was time for the return trip to Skagway.
Waterfall
I wanted multiple angles of this one, apparently.
Waterfall, II
At least it was one of the prettier ones we saw.
Waterfall, III
And others agreed with me.
Hunting for Mountain Goats
I was told there was a white dot on there, but I don't see it anymore.
Lone Eagle
Another dot in the trees. It's probably a different one than before, though.
Collapsed Tree
I think what fascinates me about this picture is that it looks like it would work vertically as well.
Forest of Trees
Oh yeah, that's the definition of 'forest'. I forgot.
Glaciers and Trees
Oh, nature, how pretty you are!
Photographer on Board
I wasn't alone on the ship, believe me.
Another Helicopter
I guess we're back!
Sun Princess
Yep. Back home we go!
