The Dancing Illini is holding a FREE practice session at the Regent
Ballroom this Wednesday at 9:30. It's a terrific opportunity to brush up
on the dances you've been learning, plus check out the best dance floor in
town with your friends from the Dancing Illini. We hope that with practice
and experience you will join us there for the weekly ballroom dances,
7:30pm Friday (with salsa until 1am every other week).

Some of our experienced instructors will be available to help if you've
forgotten your steps. We will tailor the music based on attendance and
focus on dances from this round of classes: swing, waltz, salsa, rhumba,
hustle and tango. We'll even find someone to show you the basic steps you
don't know so you can spend more time on the floor.

The Regent Ballroom is located at 1406 Regency Drive West. From Champaign,
take Neil Street, which becomes US 45, south to Burwash Avenue. (The
northwest corner of US 45 and Burwash has a car dealership, Twin City
Honda; the southwest corner has a gas station.) Turn right (west) onto
Burwash, go several blocks, turn left (south) onto Regency Drive West. The
Regent is less than a block south, on the east side of Regency Drive West.

Contact dancing+officers@uiuc.edu if you need a ride.

The practice will be preceded at 9pm by a general meeting. Items on the
agenda are:

Possible Ride Coordinator officer position (any volunteers out there? take
free di classes, plus get fun officer e-mail daily!)
Election of new officers
Approval of constitutional revisions and budget items
Discussion of course schedule for second six week session

As always, motions and nominations from the membership will be accepted.

Current officer nominations:
Secretary-Greg Morris
Vice President-Jeffrey Tran
Treasurer-Rich Guerra
Video Librarian (appointed position) Carolyn Estes

if you are interested in becoming an officer please contact

Dancer's Corner The Quickstep
***********************************

"This dance might be termed the 'joy' dance of modern dancing. Whilst the
basic figures are quite simple, the tempo of the music and the whole
character of the dance seem to invite a care-free interpretation of its
bright rhythm. The beginner will find the basic steps easy to learn and
easy to fit to music. The advanced dancer will discover that the music
lends itself to an infinite variety of steps.
In most sports and pastimes, a sound knowledge of the basic work is
necessary before the 'frills' can be indulged in with any degree of
pleasure. The dancer who masters the fundamentals of the Quickstep will
have command of a dance that can never grow stale, a dance that is
unquestionably the most attractive expression of rhythm the world has ever
known." - from Alex Moores "Ballroom Dancing"

The Quickstep can be danced at any Dancing Illini ballroom event or at
Friday night Regent dances. Foxtrot/quickstep is taught in the fall by our
own Bruce Leasure and Hilary Frooman. Appropriate preparation would be any
'standard' experience, such as beginning waltz/rhumba or beginning
tango/cha-cha.
