If you have ballroom danced for at least a semester,
If you want to get better,
If you are willing to practice some outside of class,

then the DanceSport Coaching Sessions might be right for you.
Come to the first one tonight!

15 June 1998 -- 8pm-9pm
Krannert Opera Rehearsal Room

For tonight's session, you don't need to bring a partner.
To take full advantage of the DanceSport Coaching, you will
need to find a partner to practice with. You'll probably
be able to find one among the other dancers that come tonight.

Tonight's Agenda:

7:45pm -- Come Early and warm up your muscles and start to get
your mind focused on Dancing instead of the worries of
the worries of the day.

8pm ----- Mini-lesson on the Waltz pattern Kathryn taught

8:15pm -- Technique Drills
a) Heel Lead Footwork
b) Beginning Swing
(the term "swing" is used to describe a quality of
movement in Waltz, Foxtrot, QuickStep and Viennese Waltz)

8:30pm -- Dancing/Coaching
There will be Waltz music playing. You and your partner will be
dancing. Hilary or I will come around, watch each couple dance,
and offer suggestions. You can dance Kathryn's Waltz pattern,
or some other pattern that you are working on. If you have a
question, or an step sequence that doesn't work, Hilary or I
will be happy to work on that with you.

If you don't have a partner, and can't find one tonight, there
is still plenty to work on. Have you tried dancing a pattern
by yourself? You could also work on the drills.

9pm ----- If you are really a dance addict, then you leave for the
Monday night practice at the Regent (starts at 9:30pm)

Beginning Swing Drill

Dance this pattern, by yourself,
Full Reverse Turn, Closed Change,
Full Natural Turn, Closed Change

* Start with weight on Right Foot, facing diagonal center (DC).
Extend your arms fully to the sides.
* Slightly turn body, but not feet, to the right.
* Think of the first 3 counts of the reverse turn as
Forward, Forward, Close. They form an almost straight line do DC.
* Take the two Forward Steps (left, then right), and as you do
so, swing the right hand (and the right side of your body)
forward and up so that your body ends up with your arms parallel
to the line going to DC that you just danced on.
* Stretch the right hand and side up to close your feet (on 3)
* Lower to place all of your left foot on the floor, and
prepare to step back with the right foot.
* Notice that you are now prepared to do a similar motion,
going backwards, down the line of dance (LOD)
* Think of the second 3 counts of the reverse turn as
Back, Back, Close. They form almost a straight line to LOD.
* Take the two Backward Steps (right, then left), and as you do
so, swing the left hand (and the left side of you body)
backward and up sot that your body ends up with your arms
parallel to the line going to LOD that you just danced on.
* Stretch the left hand and side up to close your feet (on 3)
* Lower to place all of your right foot on the floor, and prepare
to step forward with your left foot.

Continue alternating sides through the remainder of the pattern.
