Hello all, I've been getting a few questions about Contra dancing.
Here's the scoop, as I recieved it from the gentleman who runs the info
email lists for the local contra and english country dancing groups.
Contact me by email, if you would like info about how to subscribe to
either list.

enjoy.

At a typical evening of contra dance the primary activity is contras
with a few squares. There will also be a couple of waltzes and occasionaly
another couple dance such as a schottische, hambo or polka. While there is
always room around the edge for couples who wish to dance alone, a big part
of the appeal of contra dance is that you are dancing as a group with all
the other dancers.

Since contra dance is very simple with no footwork or complex figures it
is great for people who just want to join in. Also since the tradition
is to switch partners after each dance, there is no need to come with
someone in order to be able to dance. I would encourage any of your
members to come and check it out.

English Country dance is similar, with slightly different figures and
formations. Since each dance is taught before the band starts playing
and then called, there is no need to know anything about it before giving
it a try. I'm pretty sure the contra dance schedule for June will be;

Friday June 7, Crystal Lake Park, 8-11
Saturday June 15, Illiini Union, 8-11
Friday June 21, Crystal Lake Park, 8-11
Friday June 28, Crystal Lake Park, 8-11

The English Country Dance group will be holding their annual Playford Ball
on Saturday June 8 at the Channing-Murray Foundation from 8 to 11. There will
be an introduction/review from 7 to 8. In addition there will be some English
Country Dance at the Champaign County Historical Museum on Sunday June 23 in
the afternoon.

Let me know if I can help out in any way.
