For 2007, delve into the study of the contemporary Argentine Tango, as it is
danced TODAY in the milongas of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Tango is going
through tremendous growth throughout the US (and the world) and
Champaign-Urbana is no exception. Our classes and milongas (social dances)
are popular and fun. Learn from Ron Weigel and Susana Vazquez Weigel,
experienced tango dancers (since 1998) and instructors (since 2001), who
have studied extensively with many of the best tango instructors in
Argentina, the US, and Europe. Ron & Susana also have miles of experience
dancing in the tango night clubs of Buenos Aires, andf at tango festivals in
the US, and they will teach you how to dance the popular contemporary style
of tango danced in these places.

    Classes offered:

    * Tango 1. Foundations of Tango
    Mondays 8:30-10 PM
    Jan 22 - Feb 12 (4 wks)
    $30

    - This class introduces the close embrace of contemporay Argentine Tango,
and the technique of maintaining connection in walking and turns. Basic
navigational tools are taught. All of this is presented within the context
of connection with the rhythm and phrasing of different kinds of tango
    music, including milonga and vals.
    - No partner or prior tango experience required.
    - Tango 1 is the entry course for those with prior tango experience who have
not previously learned tango in close embrace.

    * Tango 3C. Milonga: Unique Vocabulary, Navigation & Musicality
    Wednesdays 8:30-10 PM
    Jan 17 - Feb 7 (4 wks)
    $30
    - Pre-requisite: Tango 2 or 8+ hrs of workshops at close embrace tango
    weekends (Urbana or elsewhere)

    - This class focuses on the musical and navigational structure of milonga
that typifies milonga as a dance different from tango and vals. The course
provides an integrated approach to milonga showing how a relatively simple
vocabulary can be shaped by the structure of the music and navigational
needs to create a highly improvised dance. Techique for men and women in
sharing the connection required for a highly improvised dance is stressed
throughout, as well as the character of expression that is unique to
    milonga.

All classes are taught at the
    Phillips Recreation Center
    505 W Stoughton
    Urbana
