SC98: High Performance Networking and Computing (formerly Supercomputing) CALL FOR PAPERS TECHNICAL PAPERS Deadline for extended abstracts: May 15, 1998 Technical papers reporting results and experiences related to high performance networking and computing are solicited for presentation at SC98. Topics for consideration include: > Local and Wide Area Networking > Distributed Computing Systems > Data and Computationally Intensive Applications > Scalable Architectures > System Interconnection Networks and Technologies > High Performance Input/Output > Parallel and Distributed Algorithms > Program Environment and Tools > Performance Measurement and Analysis > Visualization > Collaboration Of particular interest at SC98 will be presentations that focus on the next five years of high performance networking and computing--for both data and computationally intensive applications. What are the enabling technologies? What are the areas of commonality between the traditional areas of scientific high performance computing and the world of very large database exploitation by commercial enterprises? Extracting meaningful information from terabyte-size storage faces similar challenges whether it is accomplished for scientific applications, digital libraries or retail sales. What research cuts across and serves all of these needs? Acceptance for publication and presentation will be based upon program committee review of extended abstracts. Special emphasis will be placed on submissions that demonstrate timely results, technologies or experiences that are most likely to have impact on the productive use of high performance networked computing systems. The program committee will review each submission and select papers based on originality, timeliness, relevance and clarity, thus assuring a technical program of the highest quality. Each selected contributor will be given 30 minutes at SC98 to present his or her paper. Authors may use electronic materials for their presentations based on guidelines from the program committee. Deadline and Format Information For SC97, we responded to community requests to permit greater timeliness of reported results by basing paper acceptance on extended abstracts. That was extremely successful, and we will continue this approach for SC98. The deadline for submission of extended abstracts is May 15, 1998. Extended abstracts must be submitted via the WWW. Abstracts received via fax will not be considered. The authors of accepted papers will be notified by June 15, 1998. These authors will be required to submit a full and final paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings by August 7, 1998. Because of this "just in time" process, authors who fail to meet this deadline will have their submission and opportunity for presentation withdrawn. All accepted final papers must follow the official HTML 3.2 specification; embedded Java applets are also acceptable. Survey Talks Invited speakers will be asked to describe the current state of work in their field of interest, propose questions and pose problems that specialists in other areas might be able to solve, thus advancing the field. Of particular interest in this set of presentations will be the focus on the next five years of high performance computing--;its enabling technologies and tools, techniques and environments that cross scientific/technical and commercial domains. The target audience for each speaker will be individuals with technical expertise in an area other than that of the speaker, with the explicit goal of conveying ideas, results and requirements across fields to encourage discussion beyond normal discipline boundaries. In planning this track, the program committee would like to know what topics would generate the most interest. Recommendations for topics should be sent to the Survey Talks Chair, Rick Stevens (papers98@mail.supercomp.org). Publication of Papers Accepted final papers meeting deadline and format requirements will appear on the SC98 Proceedings CD-ROM and on the WWW. In addition, a small number of the best papers (as determined by the program committee) will be considered for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Best Paper Awards Awards for best papers will be announced during SC98. The best conference paper will receive an award of $1,000. The best paper with a student as principal author will receive an award of $500. How to Submit an Extended Abstract Extended abstracts of technical papers must include: > Descriptive title for the proposed paper > Name, telephone and fax number, postal and email address of each author > An indication of "Student Paper" if the principal authors are students > A 5 page summary of the proposed paper Abstracts and subsequent final papers are submitted without conditions; that is, authors must obtain any necessary approvals and/or clearances prior to submission. Authors of accepted papers will be required to sign a copyright release form. Electronic submissions will be accepted via the WWW at www.supercomp.org/sc98/submissions/. Proposals sent via fax will not be considered. The electronic submission process for technical papers, tutorials and education program will open on Monday, May 4. You may submit your extended abstract beginning on that date. The deadline for submissions is May 15, and the submission site will close and not be able to accept any further abstracts on May 22. (That is, there will be absolutely no exceptions for late admissions after that date.) Please note that the requirement for a technical paper submission is for a single 5-page extended abstract that sufficiently describes your work so that the committee is able to evaluate it and make a judgment about its suitability for the conference relative to other submissions. The submission will need to be in HTML format, with the 5 pages containing approximately 2000 words (total). You will be able to submit up to 3 figures in addition to the text, using gif or jpeg formats. Full directions will be available on the site on May 1. Questions should be addressed to: Joanne L.
