Start out with the webpage : http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/biocore/ BiocoRE is a web-based collaborative environment useful for research and traning. Switch to: http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/biocore/ss03/ You have a current version of this webpage in your handout folder. BioCoRE is designed around the concept of secure projects. The three projects are: SS03 Announce: Used for instructors to disseminate information to students. SS03 Work: You can do your work here. You can talk about science, etc. SS03 Social: This project is for you. You can say whatever you want here. You are welcome to create your own projects. Once you are logged into BioCoRE, each BioCoRE webpage has a link in the left sidebar to create projects. If you create projects you can decide who you want to be members. Only people that you invite can see the project. For starting BioCoRE you should log into the EWS machines, and from the terminal, type in: > tbss and then you can type 'biocore'. (biocore is a unix shell script that looks like the following: # ------------------------------------------------------------------------- # #!/bin/csh /usr/local/javaws/javaws http://biocore-s.ks.uiuc.edu/biocore/servlet/NewMain/applet=app\&webstart=yes # ------------------------------------------------------------------------- # This shell script requires Java Web Start ( http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/ ) to be installed on the machine. Additionally, you need to already have an account with BioCoRE to be able to start BioCoRE this way. If you don't have a BioCoRE account, you need to create an account from a web browser (instructions are at the http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/biocore/ss03/ website) Log in as 'ss03demo'. From the Control Panel, click on the 'SS03 Social' tab. Go to Project | Project Summary and launch the Project Summary web page. Note in the left column that I can review project invitations. This means that I have been invited to a project and I can choose to join the project by clicking that link. So, I am going to add myself to the 'SS03 Announce' and 'SS03 Work' projects. Switch back to the Control Panel. Each project has its own tab. The tabs can be used for chatting, notification, etc. Note that the tabs change colors when an important event has occured. Switch back to the webpage. Job Management can be used to submit computational jobs to supercomputers. You can use this to submit your jobs of an evening. Instructions for doing this are in your handouts. The message board can be used for sending long text messages. The website link library can be used to tell other project members about interesting websites. We've added quite a few interesting sites to the SS03 Social project. Switch to the SS03 Work project. Go to the BioFS and show that files are available there for download.
