The Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group, located in the Beckman Institute, is seeking to fill a part-time system administration position. This position will extend until at least into the 2007 Fall Semester.

Position Description

The sysadmin assistant provides assistance to the lead systems administrator with maintaining system services; building and documenting new services; routine web site maintenance and upgrades; documenting existing systems; user support on Unix-based systems; and otherwise working on routine administration of a large heterogeneous network of high-performance workstations and servers.

The capable candidate will be encouraged to broaden his/her technical skills on the job, while working with the existing capable sysadmin team. This position will provide a great opportunity to become an expert at both implementing and utilizing state-of-the-art computer technology, as well as working to provide excellent customer service to a mid-sized research group.

Minimum Qualifications

A strong working knowledge of computer systems and software; competency with Unix commands and systems; an interest in networks, computer hardware and operating systems; a strong and long-term commitment to the job; and the ability to interact effectively with system users.

The job will consist of working 10-15 hours per week during the semester, and 25-30 hours per week during the summer.

Desired Qualifications

A strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, and other modern web technologies; the ability to program in Perl and/or other scripting languages; federal work-study eligibility; web design skills, either with Photoshop, or just plain visual design; knowledge of and/or experience with Linux clusters.
