We use the same operating system, and to echo Aron, in our experience,
self-compiled binaries have little or no advantage over the prebuilt ones,
even when playing extensively with the compilation flags.
That said, if you're trying to compile a modified source or something like
that, the following might help (sorry, not sure, it's been a while):
sudo apt-get install binutils
That may not be the end of the story, though; you'll likely have to worry
about installing the *-dev packages associated with the dependencies.
