About restart.vel.old file.

Hi all. I know that *.restart.vel file stores the velocities of the all atoms in the system in the previous frames.
   
  I just don't know what the *.restart.vel.old file contains. And now my *.restart.vel file can not be read when I try to restart from the previous simulation. Can I instead restart from the corresponding *.restart.vel.old file?
